Ways Nonprofits Can Use Flickr

1. Create an account for your organization to post photos

Examples: Humane Society of the United States, Oxfam America

2. Create a group for your organization, issue, or event

Examples: Relay for Life Group, Greenpeace

3. Use tags to share and describe photos

Examples: raceforthecure, earthday

4. Hold photo contests

Example: The Nature Conservancy holds a digital photo contest each year. More information at The Nature Conservancy group.

The Environment and the Internet

I just read an interesting blog entry at comScore Voices titled The Internet Goes Green. It analyzes the number of unique visitors to three environmental related websites (epa.gov, treehugger.com, and freecycle.org) from the past year.

It also shows a few environmental related search terms and the number of times it was searched for in Feb 2007 and Feb 2008. The results showed that 6 of the 7 terms showed an increase. (earth day, recycle, hybrid cars, pollution, ecotourism, and climate change) Global warming was the most searched term but it decreased in the number of searches.

Here is one statement that got my attention in this blog entry -

"So even though we may be less likely to partake in an Earth Day rally today than in the 1970s, it's clear that environmental activism is alive and well – it's just that much of it has moved online."

Five Web 2.0 Things Nonprofits Can Do

Beth has asked "What can you do in ten minutes using Web 2.0 to be a better nonprofit professional?". Her goal is to reach 100 things!

Here are five things I came up with-

1) Fundraise online by using a fundraising widgets (Examples: SixDegrees or ChipIn) or Facebook applications (Example: Causes).

2) Create a fan page on Facebook or page on MySpace for your organization.

3) Write online petitions.

4) Promote your orgnanization's presence on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, and other sites by placing badges/links on your website.

5) Make a video and post it on YouTube, then embed it on your organization's website.

Do you have an idea to add to the list? Read Beth's Blog to learn how to submit your idea and to read other ideas.
